WOMEN’S LACROSSE VOLUNTEERS AT MAKING STRIDES WALK AT JONES BEACH

November 16, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

WANTAGH, N.Y.- Members of the Dowling College women’s lacrosse team volunteered at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk held at Jones Beach this weekend.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks are the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting nearly 300 communities with a shared determination to finish the fight. Every Making Strides event is an incredible and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about the disease, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society save lives from breast cancer by funding groundbreaking breast cancer research, providing free comprehensive information and support, and helping people take steps to reduce their risk of the disease or find it early when it’s most treatable.

Volleyball Teams Partnered in Pink

November 12, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, East Islip High School’s varsity and JV girls volleyball teams partnered with the Side-Out Foundation for the school’s annual Dig Pink rally on Oct. 15.

Preceded by weeklong Dig Pink T-shirt sales and a bake sale earlier in the day, the event raised $413 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. EI students showed their support by wearing pink and visiting the gym after school to enjoy delicious treats and exciting volleyball games, as did Superintendent of Schools John V. Dolan.

“Before the game, Superintendent Dolan stopped by to have a pep talk with the girls, and they all played hard to spike out cancer,” said head volleyball coach Romina Chacon.

Students Buddy up to Dodge for a Cause

November 11, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

For the sixth consecutive year, students and faculty members at Elwood Middle School rallied together for the school’s “Dodge Cancer” fundraiser event on Nov. 6, with all the proceeds going to help families in the community struggling with cancer.

Coordinated by teachers Darren Szokoli and Patrick Burke, the popular event drew in more than 300 student-participants in grades six through eight. A $10 donation was collected from every participant, allowing them and their teammates to take to the courts for several rounds of dodgeball.

Along with parents and friends who came to show their support, student-athletes from Elwood-John H. Glenn High School volunteered as referees in the friendly competition. Through their collective efforts, the school raised approximately $6,000 that will be given to four families in the community that have loved ones battling cancer.

“The Elwood community, students and staff have continued to rally for this event in support of these families,” said Szokoli. “I believe it’s not so much the monetary donation we are able to give back to them, but rather that they know that there are so many people that are thinking of them during such a difficult time.”
